Summer Skin Musts

There are not many things that can beat long summer days that are full of drinks, watermelon, outdoors, and good company. Now that summer is in full swing, it becomes much more common to spend hours on end in the sun enjoying all that the great outdoors has to offer. With this in mind, it is important to remember that your skin needs will change as the weather changes, and although I am a big advocate for year-round sun protection, it becomes even more vital on those long hot summer days.

With the skin being at its most vulnerable state due to the increased UV rays and environmental exposure, protection should be at the top of mind when debating skincare must haves during this time of year. The following things listed are a few key must haves for ultimate skin health, protection, and prevention to guide you through the hot summer months.

  1. Sunscreen

I know this comes as no surprise to anyone, but sunscreen is the absolute most important thing you can use in your regime all year round. Protecting the skin from the harmful aspects of the sun will not only prevent photodamage and premature aging, but also more serious conditions such as skin cancer. You should choose SPF 30 (or higher if you prefer) and re-apply throughout the day to ensure full effectiveness of your sunscreen product. Don’t forget to check expiration dates as sunscreens typically won’t last longer than 1 year.

Quick Tip: Consider keeping a bottle of sunscreen handy in your washroom so that you can easily remember to re- apply over the backs of the hands after washing them so often throughout the day, as this tends to be an area that shows signs of pre-mature aging the soonest, and is often neglected.

  1. Keep it cool

After a long day in the sun, the skin can feel a bit dehydrated and lacklustre. Even despite our best efforts, sometimes a sun burn can happen. However, sun burnt or not, the skin will benefit from a nourishing routine to help balance it after it has been exposed to heat and environmental pollutants all day. A great thing to incorporate is a hydrating mask that can be stored in the fridge and applied to the skin for 10-15 minutes, which will surely end the day off on a good note! You can also use a jade roller over top of the mask to help product penetration, lymphatic drainage, and it will feel amazing.

Another amazing addition to your daily routine is investing in a good facial spray to take with you throughout the day! These are often formulated with antioxidants, calming, and hydrating ingredients. A facial spray will help to refresh and cool the skin, and it is an easy thing to throw into your beach bag to enjoy whenever you need it. 

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to brighten the skin and fight free radical damage. It works hand in hand with your SPF to optimally protect the skin. Vitamin C is often times found in the form of a serum used in the AM and is a great choice when dealing with pigmentation issues, such as, sun damage. 

A bonus of vitamin C serums is that they are often formulated with other nourishing ingredients which will feel amazing and give the skin a beautiful glow!
